Will the next James Bond be pulling a Tom Cruise? According to one rumor, the next official James Bond film, directed by Denis Villeneuve and written by Steven Knight, could have a plot that might remind moviegoers of therecent Tom Cruise opus, Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning.
According to a rumor published by The Sun, the next James Bond will have a “plot [that] will revolve around the dangers of AI.” For those who went to see The Final Reckoning and its predecessor, Dead Reckoning, this is very close to what Ethan Hunt (Cruise) dealt with in those stories. So, is Bond biting on the style of Mission: Impossible? Unlikely. Killer AIs have been the enemy of super spies since before AI was even a thing.
AI and Misinformation in Spy Movies
Although not technically part of the James Bond series, Michael Caine’s Harry Palmer shares some spiritual connections with 007. All the movies were produced by Harry Saltzman, one of the original producing partners for the Bond movies. And the third movie in the Harry Palmer series, Billion Dollar Brain (1967), was all about Harry going up against a massive supercomputer.
Meanwhile, the 1997 James Bond movie, Tomorrow Never Dies, focused on media manipulation, though not via AI. That said, Kim Sherwood’s first Bond novel, the 2022 book Double or Nothing, introduces an AI version of “Q” into the Bond mythos. And, in 2017, Benjamin Percy’s Bond graphic novel, Black Box, dealt with cyberwarfare.
So, if the next Bond movie tackles AI, it will be a first for the film franchise. But, certainly not the first time Bond has dealt with supercomputers.
Next James Bond Movie Filming Date
Numerous sources, includingMetro, have also indicated that the 26th official James Bond movie will go into production “next April at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire.”
If true, this means that director Denis Villeneuve will go straight from directing Dune 3 to filming the next Bond. Could this mean that the next James Bond actor will be announced soon? Or will the next 007 movie film with the actor’s identity still a secret to the public?
Either way, after years of waiting and wondering, Bond fans know this: Things are finally happening.
