Less than a year after the fall of the Government of Michel BarnierFrance continues to drift. His successor, François Bayroufell in September, and the current prime minister, Sébastien Lecornubarely maneuvers in the National Assembly to avoid the same fate.
Many analysts boast that France is dethroning Italy as the most unstable European nation. But the data that leave the survey French fracturesprepared by the Ipsos institute for The Worldthe Cevipof of Sciences Po, the Jean Jaurès Foundation and the Montaigne Institute, leave little room for humor.
What this study shows is a general deterioration in trust in institutions and a growing detachment from the democratic system. Eight out of ten citizens say that their ideas are not represented in the current political landscape. 85% consider necessary “a real boss in France to restore order.”
The desire for more authority is growing in all ideological spectrums, except the social democratic.
The president Emmanuel Macron It is tremendously unpopular. The recent suspension of the pension reform, one of the main bets of his second term, confirms his decline.
After months of protests and fruitless negotiations, Macron agreed to postpone the full application of the measure until after the 2027 presidential elections. A concession aimed at preserving Lecornu’s fragile parliamentary majority. The decision, which threatens open a hole of 13,000 million euros a year in public accountsshows the president’s bad form.
Only 14% of French people approve of his management, according to other polls. The research published by The World reveals, along these lines, the enormous support for the dissolution of the National Assembly. 43% of French people call for new legislative elections, 12 points more than in 2024. Among the voters of the National Regrouping of Marine Le Pen support rises to 64%.
But the wear and tear goes beyond Macron. Only 10% of those surveyed say they trust political parties, four points less than last year. Confidence in deputies falls to 20%. Two thirds of the population perceive widespread corruption among public officials, and almost nine out of ten believe that political leaders act out of their own interest.
The only ones who escape this negative perception are the mayors, who retain the trust of 68% of citizens.
It is true that two thirds of French people consider this regime to be “irreplaceable”. But eight out of ten believe that it “works poorly.” And among Le Pen’s supporters, 52% think that other political systems could be equally valid.
What explains so much indignation? It is worth taking a look at the main concerns of citizens. 36% is the loss of purchasing power: more than half of families struggle to make ends meet.
In 22%, immigration. The idea that there are too many foreigners in the country is shared by 95% of Lepenists, 86% of Republican conservatives and 57% of Macronists.
There is more notable data. 61% are in favor of increasing taxes on the richest to reduce inequalities. The National Regrouping voters are, in this sense, the most heterogeneous: 57% support the redistribution of wealth and 64% advocate limiting State intervention in the economy as much as possible.
