Kaizer Chiefs are now linked with Maxi Mpia Nzengeli again, a rising star from Tanzanian giants Young Africans SC, as the Soweto club gears up for a significant squad shake-up.
Nzengeli, 25, has impressed with his versatility, seamlessly operating on both flanks and through the middle. His flexibility on the pitch makes him a desirable asset for Chiefs, who are actively looking to inject pace and creativity into their attack.
Nzengeli keen to join Kaizer Chiefs
Nzengeli joined Yanga on 13 July 2023 from AS Maniema Union in the Democratic Republic of Congo. While he made an immediate impact in the CAF Champions League, starting 11 matches and playing a key role in Yanga’s run to the quarter-finals, he has now set his sights on the South African Betway Premiership.
“So he wants to come to Chiefs, because he is not keen on renewing with Yanga,” a source revealed.
“Also he is said to be in advanced talks with them.”
Nzengeli was also linked with Chiefs last year ahead of Yanga’s high-profile pre-season fixtures against Kaizer Chiefs, Bundesliga outfit FC Augsburg, and TS Galaxy.
Chiefs’ midfield options and the need for depth
Currently, Kaizer Chiefs boast the likes of Makabi Lilepo, Tebogo Potsane, Thabo Cele, and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo in their wing and midfield ranks. While all four players can operate out wide, the club may still benefit from the dynamism Nzengeli brings.
Mduduzi Shabalala and Samkelo Zwane, though primarily midfielders, occasionally shift into wider roles. However, Nzengeli’s ability to consistently deliver across attacking positions could offer the tactical flexibility Chiefs have been missing.
Quiet season statistically but full of potential
Despite making six appearances in the 2024/2025 CAF Champions League this season, Nzengeli registered no goals or assists. Still, his performances have done enough to keep scouts and clubs interested. His lack of end product may be a concern, but his work rate, movement, and flair on the ball continue to earn praise.
