When it comes to supermarket bakeries, Lidl often takes the crown for having ‘gorgeous’ cakes and pastries, and their croissants have even won awards.
But another retailer’s in-store bakery is currently being praised by customers, after a brand new item was quietly added to the range.
Marks & Spencer has just launched a chocolate version of the classic Pastel de nata (Portuguese custard tart), which costs £1.10 and features aa creamy baked egg custard and chocolate filling inside an all-butter cocoa pastry.
And while it’s only been available for a day or two, shoppers are already claiming it’s ‘one of the best products M&S has sold for a long time’.
Snaps of the sweet treat have been doing the rounds on Facebook and Instagram, where M&S fans have hailed it as ‘banging’, ‘worth’ the cost, and a ‘10/10’.
On Instagram, @scotthamilton01 said: ‘Had one yesterday, banging.’
While over on Facebook Joe Midgley wrote: ‘One of the best products M&S have sold for a long time! Worth £1.10.’
Chris Sutherwood on TikTok thought: ‘Anything their bakery makes is GOLD.’
And the team behind the @marksandspencergemini account made a video saying: ‘Honestly… 10/10. Run, don’t walk to M&S Bakery.’
It’s not all that surprising the new product is proving popular as the OG Pastel de nata from M&S already has a number of fans, including @xlucefitnessx who dubbed it the ‘tastiest pastry in the world’.
However, not everyone is a fan, as some people thought the chocolate filling overpowered the custard flavour.
This comes after M&S shoppers went wild for the retailer’s Big Mix chocolates.
The Big Mix from M&S costs £7 for a 650g carton or £12 for a huge 1.2kg tin and features a mix of 10 different sweets in colourful wrappers, suitable for vegetarians.
The selection includes Salted Caramel, Coffee Truffle, Hazelnut in Caramel, Cream Toffee, Milk Crème, Caramel Fudge, Strawberry Crème, Orange Crème, Biscuit in Caramel and a Butterscotch Éclair.
Customers claimed it was ‘better than’ the likes of Quality Street and Roses and the sweets were a ‘real joy’ to eat.
On Ocado, A shopper known as littlepieces gave them a 5/5 rating, writing: ‘Best chocolate box for Christmas!
‘These are our favourite chocolate box at Christmas time for sharing with the family – the chocolate is nice and thick and lovely fillings. I’ve been buying these for a few years now instead of the other popular brands.’
Whirley Shirley agreed, saying: ‘Absolutely love this new mix of chocs with some different flavours to the norm. Coffee one a real joy, a nice milk chocolate covering too.’
If this weren’t enough, M&S also recently added 400 new and improved items to its Foodhall and brought back a ‘phenomenal’ sell-out treat.
