Ricky Hatton’s Cause of Death Revealed

Four weeks after the death of former World Champion boxer Ricky Hatton, his death was officially revealed.

The British boxer died by suicide, which was confirmed at a South Manchester coroner’s court hearing on Thursday, Oct. 16. The inquest into his death has been opened and adjourned.

On Sunday, Sept. 14, Hatton’s manager, Paul Speak, found the boxer “unresponsive” at his home in Hyde, England.

“Officers were called by a member of the public to attend Bowlacre Road, Hyde, Tameside, at 6.45am today where they found the body of a 46-year-old man. There are not currently believed to be any suspicious circumstances,” Greater Manchester Police initially reported, via Sky Sports.

In the court hearing, a police officer explained how the Hatton family had seen him a few days before his death, and he appeared well. He was scheduled to make his grand return to the ring to compete against Eisa Al Dah on December 2 in Dubai.

The day of his death, Speak had gone to Hatton’s home to pick him up to take him to the airport. Hatton was to attend an event in Dubai, but when Speak arrived, he found him unresponsive.

According to the court hearing, the senior coroner is still awaiting the final cause of death, but it is indicating towards death by hanging. A full inquest has been scheduled for March 20.

Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton had a career spanning 15 years from 1997 to 2012. He won 45 of 48 matches during that time and took a three-year break after losing his match to Manny Pacquiao. He briefly returned in 2012 before announcing his retirement.

He was inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame in 2024 and is survived by his three children and grandchildren.
