“Welcome to the Botto exhibition. You are about to enter an exhibition created not by a human, but by an artificial intelligence. Botto is a machine artist who has been producing thousands of works of art per day. In the last four years, he has created seven million works. Is it art? Isn’t it art?”
This is the curious welcome message that greets us, in English, at the entrance of Eterno, the Cultural Affairs gallery founded by Vhils (stage name of Alexandre Farto) in Marvila, Lisbon, and which was created in June to explore the intersection between digital and physical art. “Botto: The Art of Collective Minds” is on display here until October 25th, an exhibition of works generated by artificial intelligence (AI) “that raises more questions than it answers”, reads the book that accompanies it: about the relationship between humans and AI; control and autonomy of machines; creativity, copyright and collectivity in the digital age; and the historical debates about who can create art, who gives it value, and what gives it meaning. To date, more than 500 people have visited this exhibition, which is free to enter.
