One of the founding members of KISS is reportedly fighting for his life after suffering injuries during a fall several weeks ago.
On Thursday, TMZ reported that Ace Frehley, the band’s original guitarist, is on life support. Frehley fell in his studio and needed to be hospitalized last month.
The fall caused the musician to cancel his upcoming tour dates, simply citing “ongoing medical issues” as the reason for the adjustment.
Frehley Canceled Tour Dates Earlier This Year
“He is fine, but against his wishes, his doctor insists that he refrain from travel at this time,” the initial announcement read on social media. TMZ says that Frehley suffered a brain bleed as a result of the fall, and that his condition has not improved.
Frehley was a founding member of KISS, along with Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley and Peter Criss. He was the band’s lead guitarist from 1973 through 1982, and is credited on each of their first ten studio albums. Known as “Space Ace,” Frehley was a fan favorite for his skilled and expressive guitar play on stage.
“Rock and Roll All Nite,”“I Was Made for Lovin’ You” and “Detroit Rock City” were among the hits Frehley helped create during his first run with the band, and he’s well known for his cover of the song “Back in the New York Groove” on his debut album.
Frehley’s Success and Influence on Guitarists
Many contemporary guitarists have cited him as an influence, and his career is often tied to his trademark Gibson Les Paul guitar. He often accompanied performances with a smoke and light show generated by his custom guitar “Ampie,” to the delight of fans around the world.
After leaving the band in the early 80s, Frehley would embark on a successful solo career. His first solo album – released while still a KISS member – was a major success, as was his first album with his band Frehley’s Comet.
Frehley rejoined the band for their 1996 reunion, and toured and performed alongside his original members until 2002. He returned to solo work, releasing seven more albums of his own while continuing a touring schedule.
“10,000 Volts,” Frehley’s most recent album, was released in 2024 and charted in several countries around the world. His next album, “Origins Vol. 3” was slated to come out in 2025.
