Several American media outlets said that a jury in the state of Maryland, near Washington, indicted John Bolton, the former national security advisor to President Donald Trump during his first term, on the grounds that he illegally kept and sent secret information.
John Bolton (76 years old) has become the third person targeted by the Republican billionaire and charged by the judiciary since his return to the White House.
Bolton was charged in an investigation into the illegal retention and transmission of confidential information.
The investigation into Bolton, who served for more than a year in Trump’s first administration before his dismissal in 2019, came to light in August when the FBI searched his home in Maryland and his office in Washington in search of secret records he may have kept from his years working in the government.
The 18-count indictment sets the tone for an upcoming court case centered around a prominent figure in Republican foreign policy circles, known for his hard-line views on American power, and who emerged after leaving Trump’s first government as a prominent and outspoken critic of the president.
For his part, Bolton denied any wrongdoing, saying that the accusations were part of Trump’s “efforts to intimidate” opponents.
