Mexico City, October 16 (However).- The Governor of Veracruz, Rocío Nahle Garcíaassured this Thursday that before the Cazones River in Rica’s picture overflow, there were warnings of Mexican Petroleum (Pemex) and Civil defensedependency that evacuated thousands of peoplebut some did not want to or could not evacuate their homes.
“Here in Poza Rica, at three in the morning, on the day of the events, the Pemex alarm sounded, and in addition Civil Protection began to shout. In this way, thousands of people could be evacuated. Other people did not want to leave their house or could not, I don’t know, but the alarm did sound and there was no way for the crest to be measured before,” declared the Governor when approached by the media.
Nahle García recalled that the river overflow occurred in the early morning of October 10 and that it was due to the geographical location of Veracruz. He also reiterated that there was no way to prevent “the crest.”
“A lot of water fell from the sister neighboring states, plus the rain we had in Veracruz. The Cazones River, which comes down mainly from Puebla, Hidalgo, overflowed and flooded a very important part of Poza Rica (…) And here in Veracruz, our geography, well, is down here, because all the rivers flow into the Gulf of Mexico,” he explained.
He added that the Pantepec river flooded the municipality of Álamo, while the Moctezuma flooded communities in northern Veracruz. In the Sierra de Huayacocotla, he highlighted, there were landslides and roads collapsed due to saturation of rain, which is why eight air bridges were established to serve the community.
Through a statementthe state government assured that doctors, nurses, psychologists and support brigades are already serving the population affected by the floods in the northern part of the state, offering medical care, disease prevention and humanitarian aid.
“As part of the comprehensive response strategy, the Ministry of Health enabled 47 temporary shelters in the health jurisdictions of Poza Rica, Tuxpan and Pánuco, all with medical and nursing care, and with 24-hour service in those with the highest concentration of people,” the Administration explained.
Likewise, 42 mobile units and medical tents were installed in communities with difficult access or damage to their infrastructure, guaranteeing timely care in coordination with the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) and IMSS-Bienestar, the Institute of Security and Social Services for State Workers (ISSSTE) and Pemex, institutions that also provide care to people without rights.

Regarding the supply of medicines, the director of Public Health, Leonel Rivera Pinete, reported sufficiency of more than 80 percent, ensuring constant supply in hospitals and health centers. The Universal Vaccination Program operates in the field, applying biologicals against tetanus, hepatitis, influenza and COVID-19, as part of the preventive strategy in shelters and affected communities.
“Thanks to the humanitarian airlift, the transfer of patients from isolated locations such as Ilamatlán, Texcatepec and Chahuatlán has been achieved, prioritizing people with chronic conditions, pregnant women and patients on dialysis,” indicated the Government of Veracruz.
He also reported that currently no epidemic outbreaks have been recorded in the affected areas; However, he noted that the Secretariat maintains continuous epidemiological surveillance and preventive measures at strategic points to contain any possible health risk.
