Given the implementation of the biometric CURP in Mexico, citizens have doubts regarding the mandatory nature of its procedure and the consequences of not completing the procedure.
Based on a reform to the General Population Law, published in July of this year, the Unique Population Registry Code will no longer be just an alphanumeric record to become a comprehensive identification tool.
The new format will integrate the holder’s biometric data, such as fingerprints, digital photography, iris scanning and electronic signature.
The Government of Mexico, headed by President Claudia Sheinbaum, promotes this format stating that it will not only help combat identity theft, it will also support the optimization of search and location processes for missing people, with a Single Identity Platform.
What will be the consequences of not processing the biometric CURP?
Although since October 16 all government agencies, public institutions and private organizations are required to accept the biometric CURP as an official identification document, President Claudia Sheinbaum clarified that Its processing during this first stage is completely voluntary.
Thus, Failure to process the biometric CURP does not generate immediate sanctions. However, according to the Official Gazette of the Federation, not updating the CURP before the biometric system becomes a requirement could complicate the management of procedures.
How is the biometric CURP processed?
The biometric CURP process must be carried out in person at the Civil Registry offices or in the 145 Renapo modules distributed nationwide. The process can also be carried out online through the Llave MX portal, as long as the citizen’s data has been previously collected by other agencies, such as the INE or the SAT.
What documents are needed to process the biometric CURP?
- Updated and certified birth certificate.
- Traditional CURP, validated by Renapo.
- Valid official identification with photograph (INE credential, passport, professional ID).
- Proof of address (no older than three months).
- Active email and cell phone number.
