Letters to the Diary: The crisis in Tulum

We received from Jorge E. Torre Loría, former Secretary of Tourism of Yucatán, the following writing:

Alarms have been going off due to the low occupancy in the municipality of Tulum.

The sargassum problem was much more severe this year than in previous years and complaints from tourists about the very high costs of services have scared away national tourism, and with good reason.

I was in that destination about four months ago and I was impressed by a restaurant for the prices it advertised at the entrance. A bottle of black label was 43,000 pesos and a bottle of rum was 22,000.

Talking to the captain, he told me that the clients’ accounts exceeded 500,000 pesos and that his clients were foreigners of very high economic level.

This is an example that should not be repeated in any tourist center in the country, because if tourism does not return, the municipality can become a ghost town because everyone lives off tourism.

The popular saying that says: you have to exploit tourism, not the tourist, can be applied here.
