Breaking: Proteas beat Australia to win the WTC final

The Proteas managed to hold their nerve to beat Australia to win the 2025 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) on Saturday at Lord’s, England.

The win sees South Africa win their first ICC trophy since 1998. Having gone into the final as underdogs, the Proteas bowled well to dismiss the Aussies for 212 in the first innings and again 207 in their second.

Despite their disappointing 138 in the first innings, Temba Bavuma’s men scored 282 to claim the famous win over Australia.

A second innings 147 partnership between Aiden Markram and Temba Bavuma was critical in the Proteas claiming their first trophy in 27 years. Needed 282 runs to win, the Proteas lost an early wicket of Ryan Rickelton but Wiaan Mulder’s positive 27 indicated that Day 3 in Lord’s was always going to favour the batting side.

Captain Temba Bavuma was dropped by Steven Smith early in his innings and made the most of his second life by scoring 66 despite suffering from a hamstring injury.

On Day 4 of the WTC final, the Proteas needed just 69 runs to win with eight wickets in hand. Bavuma, Tristan Stubbs and Markram were the wickets to fall but David Bedingham stood tall to guide the team to victory with an unbeaten 20.

Did the Proteas end their choking tag?
