Infectious disease specialist Bárbara Flor de Lima was appointed director of the National Program for Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and HIV/AIDS, the Ministry of Health announced this Monday. The position had been unfilled for three years.
The position had been unfilled since September 2022, when the then director of the Program, doctor Margarida Tavares, took on duties as Secretary of State for Health Promotion in the team of the Minister of Health, Manuel Pizarro.
Bárbara Flor de Lima has been a hospital infectious disease assistant at Fernando Fonseca Hospital since 2017, being part of the Local Coordination Group of the Infection Prevention and Control and Antimicrobial Resistance Program (GCL-PPCIRA) of the Amadora-Sintra Local Health Unit. Between July 2023 and March 2025, she held the position of clinical director at Hospital Fernando Fonseca, having during this period chaired the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee at ULS Amadora/Sintra.
Previously, between September 2021 and 2023, he coordinated the GCL-PPCIRA of the same hospital, also integrating the Quality and Patient Safety Committee and the Legionella Prevention and Control Team. Bárbara Flor de Lima also holds competencies in Travel Medicine (February 2020) and Infection Control and Antibiotic Resistance (February 2025), both awarded by the Medical Association.
The new director of the Directorate-General for Health program will continue with the program’s strategy of promoting universal access to prevention, screening, early diagnosis and adequate treatment, combating stigma and discrimination, promoting the active participation of civil society among people living with HIV infection and the most vulnerable communities.
