The US Army is on the verge of a significant technological advance: for the first time, an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) will be integrated into an autonomous demining demonstration. This initiative, due to take place at the end of the month, could fundamentally change the way minefields are cleared. The 36th Engineering Brigade prepares for the upcoming Machine Assisted Rugged Soldier (MARS) demonstration using the DARPA RACER Heavy Platform vehicle.
The RACER Heavy Platform vehicle, first tested by DARPA in 2023, is specifically designed for use in difficult terrain. At 20 feet long and weighing 12 tons, it moves on tracks and reaches significantly higher speeds compared to other tracked vehicles. These characteristics make it ideal for use in complex and harsh environments, such as those often found in military contexts.
Integration of the UGV with the M58 MICLIC system, a rocket-powered demining system, could significantly improve demining efficiency and safety. Dr. Stuart Young, program manager in DARPA’s Tactical Technology Office, emphasizes that the design of the unmanned vehicle is aimed at providing additional options on the battlefield while minimizing risk to personnel. In a recent podcast, Young explained that autonomous vehicles could play an important role in preventing injuries from improvised explosive devices (IEDs), which are commonly used by insurgents.
The US Army began its first exercises in October, during which the UGV successfully towed a trailer. The vehicle has also been equipped with an improved Overland AI user interface. These developments highlight the potential of unmanned vehicles to increase the safety and efficiency of military operations. The upcoming demonstration could be an important step toward broader adoption of such technologies in the Army.
