Critically Endangered Eastern Black Rhino Born at Cleveland Zoo

The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo has a new arrival, and his birth marks a momentous occasion for his species.

The zoo welcomed the birth of a critically endangered Eastern black rhino calf on September 13. The infant was born to 22-year-old mother Kibibbi and 25-year-old father Forrest. The little one made his public debut on October 10 after four week of private bonding with his mother.

“Every birth is significant and is an opportunity to bring awareness to the conservation issues faced by this species,” Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Executive Director Dr. Chris Kuhar said at the time. “It’s especially meaningful to share this calf’s arrival on World Rhino Day, a time when we celebrate rhinos worldwide and highlight the urgent need to protect them. We are excited to share this milestone with our community, whose support makes global conservation possible.”

Fewer than 583 Eastern black rhinos remain in the wild, the zoo explained.

Fans had the chance to help name the newborn with the choice between three culturally significant names: Makena means “happy one,” Kenza means “treasure,” Kamari means “like the moon.”

The zoo is expected to announce the name in the coming days.
