Transform slurry into renewable energy?

Is that possible? Yes. Precisely, transforming surplus manure into green energy is one of the main actions that the livestock sector is carrying out for its decarbonization. But what is that transformation like?

These slurry are stored in large tanks called digesters. Over there, Bacteria begin the process of decomposing organic matter known as anaerobic digestionbecause it is produced without oxygen and at a temperature close to 40ºC. At the end of this fermentation procedure that lasts several days, the result is, on the one hand, biogas, which is a mixture of methane, CO₂ and other gases. And on the other hand, a substance called digestate is produced, which is reused as fertilizer, due to its quality.

But the transformation does not end here, because the biogas is subjected to a final process, the upgradingthis time to eliminate CO₂ and other impurities, and become biomethane. Now yes, it is a green gas. In Pinky’s words: It’s not magic, it’s innovation!
