In Sioux Falls, the former Lincoln Elementary School site is being transformed into a vibrant community park known as Lincoln Commons. This initiative is made possible through the collaboration of the Sioux Falls School District, the City of Sioux Falls and committed citizens. The goal is to create a space that benefits both children and adults.
A central element of the redesign are the unique playhouses, which replicate historical buildings in the area. These are intended to stimulate children’s imagination and give them the opportunity to immerse themselves in the history of their neighborhood in a playful way. The playhouses will be designed to be barrier-free so that children in wheelchairs can also access them.
In addition to the playhouses, other amenities such as a basketball court, flower beds and a possible dog playground are planned. These expansions are expected to be implemented over the next three to five years. Funding for the project comes from donations from citizens and organizations, including significant support from Sioux Falls Beautiful.
The neighborhood actively participated in the design of the park by planting trees and providing water for garden maintenance. This collaborative effort shows how important it is to residents to maintain and improve their living space. The city of Sioux Falls also supports the project by maintaining the green spaces.
The opening of Lincoln Commons will be celebrated with a ceremony on October 30th. This event marks the beginning of a new era for the site that once served as a school site. Converting it into a park provides the community with a valuable space for recreation and social interaction.
