The British television landscape was recently shaken up by a remarkable premiere on Channel 4: a news program presented entirely by an AI-generated presenter. This program, which aired as part of the “Dispatches” program, was titled “Will AI Take My Job?” and examined the impact of automation on the workplace. At the end of the hour-long show, it was revealed that the presenter who appeared throughout the show was not real but was created by an AI.
This revelation raises important questions about the future of the media industry. Louisa Compton, Channel 4’s head of news and current affairs, stressed that the use of AI presenters should not become a habit. Rather, the focus should be on high-quality, fact-checked and trustworthy journalism, something that AI cannot currently achieve. Still, this stunt shows how disruptive AI can be and how easy it is to deceive audiences with content they cannot verify.
The show was based on a survey of 1,000 UK business leaders which found that 76% of companies are already using AI for tasks previously done by humans. 66% of respondents said they are excited about the use of AI in the workplace, while 41% reported that AI adoption has already led to a decline in new hires. Almost half of those surveyed expect further staff reductions in the next five years.
This development follows the controversy surrounding Tilly Norwood, a fellow AI-generated “actress” who caused a stir in the film industry. The actors’ union SAG-AFTRA criticized the fact that such AI characters are based on the work of professional actors without their permission or compensation. This endangers the livelihoods of actors and devalues human artistry.
