USA y Belice signed an agreement that will allow Washington send to the Central American country migrants who request asylum in United States territory, while their legal status is resolved. The agreement, presented as a “safe third country” agreement, must still be ratified by the Senate Belizean.
If finalized, Belize would join a list of countries—such as El Salvador, Uganda, South Sudan y Rwanda— who have agreed to receive migrants deported by the administration of Donald Trump.

He United States Department of State called the signing “an important milestone” in curbing irregular immigration and “ending abuse of the asylum system.” The document was signed by the Belizean Foreign Minister Francis Fonseca and the American diplomat Katharine Beamer.
A questioned model
The agreement is inspired by the Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees of 1951which allows a country to refer asylum seekers to a third party considered “safe.” However, humanitarian organizations have warned in other contexts that these types of agreements transfer international protection obligations to nations with fewer resources and capabilities.
Belize clarified that it reserves the right to reject specific people and that the pact will have an initial validity of two years, extendable or revocable by either party. Foreign Minister Fonseca defended the agreement, ensuring that these mechanisms “allow for an orderly, fair and legal management of asylum cases.”
