Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who appeared today at La Santé prison in Paris, has submitted a request for release, his lawyer told journalists.
The court has two months to decide on the former head of state’s request, although the period should be shorter.
His lawyer, Christophe Ingrain, considered the former President’s arrest to be a shame.
Sarkozy arrived at prison today at 9:40 am (8:40 am in mainland Portugal) to serve his five-year sentence for illegally financing the 2007 electoral campaign with funds from the former Libyan regime of Muammar Gaddafi.
The former head of state was found guilty of allowing two advisers from the Ministry of the Interior (equivalent to the Ministry of Internal Affairs) to begin negotiations in Tripoli with the aim of secretly financing the 2007 presidential campaign.
Sarkozy, 70 years old, is the first former head of state in French history to be arrested and must be placed in a special wing of the La Santé prison, in one of the 15 nine-square-meter cells in the solitary confinement unit.
Leaving home today, the former President said that “the truth will triumph”.
Sarkozy was the 23rd President of France and held the position between 2007 and 2012.
