The housing crisis in the European Union (EU) is taking on serious proportions, which is why António Costa, the president of the European Council, will become directly involved in the problem and in trying to resolve it.
“The financial capacity to have a home and access to housing are among the most urgent concerns of Europeans, from Lisbon to Copenhagen, from Dublin to Athens”, declared, this Tuesday, Costa, who was mayor of Lisbon between 2007 and 2015 and Prime Minister of Portugal between 2015 and 2024, precisely the two periods (almost 17 years) in which the housing crisis in the capital and in the country grew the most and worsened. sharpened.
On the Council president’s agenda, which includes serious crises such as the war in Ukraine or the “humanitarian disaster” in Gaza, there is now an internal European crisis, which continues to grow.
For Costa, the issue of housing “needs to be addressed at all levels: local, regional and national” and “we also need to reflect on the best way for the EU to help in these efforts and have a concrete impact in combating this crisis”.
Costa’s kick-off takes place this Wednesday, October 22nd. President Costa “will meet with the president of the Committee of the Regions, Kata Tüttő, with the outgoing president of the Economic and Social Committee, Oliver Röpke, and with his successor, Séamus Boland”, explains an official source, in a note sent to newsrooms.
“The meeting will focus on how to address the housing crisis across the EU and takes place ahead of the Tripartite Social Summit and the European Council debate on housing.”
In May this year, the more general approach was launched by the Committee of the Regions when it presented a study on “the role of cities and regions in the European Affordable Housing Plan”, in which it highlighted “the need for active subsidiarity and multi-level governance to enable a place-based approach”.
After that, last September, the European Economic and Social Committee presented its opinion on this plan, calling for a “coordinated approach” by the EU and the countries of the union “to address the shortage of affordable housing”.
