This initiative aims to lay the foundations for sustainable and independent care for astronauts on the Moon. In the 2040s, humans are expected to be permanently stationed on the moon, with lunar raw materials being mined and used directly on site. To make this possible, technologies must be developed that enable the efficient extraction of resources such as oxygen and metals from regolith.

A notable project in this context is the system developed by Team BREMEN, which consists of a mobile rover called “Coyote III” and a stationary processing unit. The rover collects the lunar dust and transports it to the processing unit, where it is sorted by size. This sorting is crucial to optimize further processing. The German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) have combined their expertise in space systems and space robotics to develop this system.

Dr. Paul Zabel from the DLR Institute of Space Systems emphasizes the importance of such technologies for a sustainable stay on the moon. The challenge is to develop solutions that prove themselves on site. The “Coyote III” rover has proven its reliability and efficiency in tests on lunar-like terrain. Dr. Mehmed Yüksel from DFKI adds that robotics is the key to relieving the burden on people in space and increasing the safety and efficiency of missions.

The ESA Space Resources Challenge, launched in 2021, promotes international collaboration between science, industry and research organizations. The competition runs until November 2025, with the best team receiving prize money of 500,000 euros. The LUNA Analog Facility in Cologne offers a unique environment for preparing for future lunar missions. This facility simulates the lunar surface and enables technologies to be tested under realistic conditions.
