Google expands AI Studio with new features for developers

MOUNTAIN VIEW / LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – Google has completely overhauled its AI Studio to make it easier for developers, startups and even non-programmers to get started with AI development. With new features like an application gallery and a model selector, Google aims to democratize app creation and lower the technical barrier.

Google has equipped its AI Studio with a new user interface that makes it easier for developers and startups to create AI-powered applications. This overhaul is intended to make the process from prompt to production smoother and is also aimed at non-programmers interested in rapid AI prototyping. The new features were first hinted at by Logan Kilpatrick and are just the first step, with further upgrades expected over the next two months.

A key element of the new features is the Application Gallery, which may be expanded into a platform for user-created apps. This is reminiscent of the artifact galleries on platforms like Claude. The construction phase now begins with an updated page that features a new model selector that currently supports Pro and Flash variants, but leaves room for future additions.

Particularly important is support for secret variables, allowing developers to securely store sensitive keys when building and publishing apps. This is an essential requirement for productive use. One notable addition is a grid of AI features that can be added to prompts with one click. These ‘superpowers’ include tools for media editing, speeding up AI responses, or requesting deeper thinking from Gemini.

The modular approach allows users to combine capabilities recognized as components by Gemini during app generation, simplifying both user intent and technical implementation. The interface also introduces a playful ‘I’m Feeling Happy’ button that offers random prompts to spark new ideas.

In the app editor, Gemini’s contextual suggestions guide feature enhancements, such as suggestions for AI-powered functionality or UI improvements. Users can now also annotate specific UI parts and direct Gemini to adjust them to refine the customization. Apps can be deployed to Google Cloud Run with one click, granting a live URL for immediate access.

While app release details, whether to a public gallery or elsewhere, are still unconfirmed, this move hints at broader discoverability and shareability in the future. Google’s larger product vision is to make AI-powered development accessible at scale, with the goal of creating one million apps by the end of the year. These changes are in line with Google’s broader push into agentic AI and make AI Studio a central part of its ecosystem to strengthen its competitive position against rivals such as Anthropic and OpenAI.
