A United Airlines plane en route from Denver to Los Angeles was forced to make an emergency landing in Salt Lake City after colliding with a weather balloon. The incident occurred at an altitude of 36,000 feet over Utah and resulted in significant damage to the cockpit windshield. Fortunately, cabin pressure stability was maintained and all 134 passengers and six crew members were uninjured.
The Californian company Windborne Systems, which operates the balloon, began investigating immediately after the incident became known. According to CEO John Dean, the collision with one of their balloons was very likely, although the company follows all Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations to prevent such incidents. Windborne Systems’ balloons are designed to collect weather data and weigh just 2.4 pounds when launched.
The collision resulted in shards of glass flying around the cockpit, endangering the safety of the pilots. Windborne Systems has already taken steps to optimize the software of its balloons and minimize the time they spend at altitudes between 30,000 and 40,000 feet. New ballast designs are also being worked on to reduce the impact of future collisions.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the incident, but communication is delayed due to the current government shutdown. Windborne Systems has forwarded all relevant data to the NTSB, which will ultimately investigate the incident. A preliminary report is expected in a few weeks, while the full report may not be available for over a year.
