MEXICO CITY.- The Bank of Mexico (Banico) presented the new family of banknotes what leaves out of circulation copies of the 20 peso billTherefore, the renewal of the denominations will be from the 50 bills.
This change aims to “make them safer and thus inhibit counterfeiting, increase their durability in circulation, and incorporate features to facilitate their use,” according to the Banxico publication.

The Mexican central bank had already anticipated this change, warning that The 20 pesos would be a denomination gradually replaced by a coinfor a longer useful life, as well as improving manufacturing and maintenance costs.
The bill that will remain in the withdrawal process will be the one that belongs to family F, that is, the one that has the image of the former president Benito Juárez and on the back a panoramic view of the archaeological zone of Monte Alban.
At the moment, the tricolor commemorative Independence bill of the same denomination, but from the G family, has not been classified in the “retirement process.”
What will happen to the 20 Mexican peso bills?
On October 10, it was published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) Circular 8/2025 addressed to credit institutions regarding the Withdrawal from circulation of 20 pesos type F banknotes.
“Twenty peso denomination notes, type F, will retain their liberating power (…), so they must be invariably accepted by credit institutions,” it is established.
Furthermore, “the country’s credit institutions will have the obligation to refrain from making the banknotes indicated above available to the public, and proceed to deposit them in this Central Bank or in its correspondents, classifying them as Banknotes in the Process of Withdrawal and/or Demonetized.”
This means that the 20 peso bills in circulation retain their cost and will continue to be valid against the banks, however, the bank will not be able to put them back into circulation.
Extra, extra: It is assured that a bill of $2000 thousand pesos will be launched, to “commemorate contemporary Mexico” with the image of Rosario Castellanos and Octavio Paz, being authorized by the Bank of Mexico.
