Talks with the US are 90% advanced, prior to the T-MEC: Ebrard

The Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrardassured when appearing in the Chamber of Deputies that there is a 90% progress in the talks with the United States referring to the strategic sectors in which obstacles have been placed, prior to the review of the T-MEC.

“I would say that we have made very important progress, prior to the review of the treaty, we have progress of around 90%. Mexico put forward elements that worry the United States about the progress. “For example, The panel we won on rules of origin in the automotive industry was not fully complied withwhich is established in the treaty. For example, unilateral measures against Mexican products under 232.

“That is, a clause, a legal provision that establishes an exception to compliance with the treaty. In summary, What Mexico is arguing is that the greatest difficulties with the treaty come from your (US) decision-making process.“he added.

He explained that he sees bilateral negotiations as impossible and not operationally feasible, regarding the T-MEC.

In addition, he said that the consultation on the treaty is already underway, the three countries did it in a coordinated manner, from a matter of process and politically, he points out that this will continue.

“The three countries do not always discuss the same issues, it would be impossible and it is not operationally feasible.”
