Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden in Cape Town is one of the most iconic gardens to visit in the world.
It’s a plant-lover’s paradise and boasts a rich biodiversity. From the natural forest, fynbos, and wildlife, it spans 528 hectares (36 of which is cultivated).
While you visit, be sure to enjoy all the facilities on offer, most notably the “Boomslang”.
Slither atop the trees
Don’t worry, this does not involve a real snake! The “Boomslang” is the nickname of the 130-metre-long and 12-metre elevated Tree Canopy Walkway winding its way through the treetops of the Arboretum in Kirstenbosch Gardens.
It’s a bridge structure constructed of timber and steel. It was made to mimic a boomslang, or tree snake, and also resembles a snake’s skeleton, its ribs and spine. Additionally, its sinuous shape truly gives the impression of an enormous snake slithering through the treetops, an awe-inspiring sight if viewed from above.
“Boomslang” has been renowned for its architectural and engineering ingenuity. It was collaboratively created by the architect Mark Thomas, structural engineers Henry Fagan and Partners, and architect Chris Bisset. During its construction, careful consideration was made for the surrounding environment, and no trees were cut down.
Furthermore, it’s designed to mirror its environment. It’s lightweight and low-maintenance, and painted to also allow growth of plant life on and around it, which will eventually make it appear as if it’s a part of the natural environment.
The walkway has been winding its way about the Arboretum for over 10 years; it was opened in May 2014 as a celebration of Kirstenbosch’s centenary in 2013. It was also voted as the Most Beautiful Object in South Africa at the Design Indaba Expo in 2015.
This is a must-visit if you’re in Cape Town and looking for something new to do or see. It will transport you above the trees with magnificent views of the surrounding landscape and mountains. While it’s reportedly free to visit the walkway, visitors will need to be mindful of the regular entrance fees into Kirstenbosch Gardens upon arrival.
