If it feels like protein is sneaking into everything lately, you’re not imagining it. Coffee chains are adding whey to lattes, grocery aisles are full of protein popcorn, and now Burger King is jumping into the mix. The fast-food giant is testing a new BK Protein Shake—and it’s only available in Brazil.
It’s a limited-time test, but it’s already getting a lot of attention. Burger King didn’t create a new drink from scratch. Instead, it took its classic milkshake recipe and added a scoop of whey protein. It’s a simple upgrade that taps into the whole protein-everything trend.
What to Know About the BK Protein Shake
Burger King Brazil’s Shake Proteico lineup comes in four flavors—Chocolate, Strawberry (Morango), Dulce de Leche (Doce de Leite), and Crunchy Chocolate (Crocante). Each contains roughly 20-grams of protein thanks to the added scoop of whey powder. The brand’s Portuguese-language tagline—“Até os nossos shakes ficaram bombados,” or “Even our shakes got buffed up”—leans into the country’s strong fitness culture.
Fast food doesn’t usually dabble in protein drinks, but Burger King’s giving it a shot. The chain’s testing whether adding whey to a regular milkshake can appeal to people chasing extra protein as much as flavor.
The shakes themselves are still indulgent. A Dulce de Leche version from the Brazilian menu clocks in at about 593 calories, with 102-grams of carbs (90-grams of sugar), 17-grams of fat, and 24-grams of protein. In other words, it’s still a dessert first—just one with a little extra fuel.
Visually, the shakes look identical to Burger King’s regular options, topped with whipped cream and branded with a bright “20 g Proteínas” badge. Online, most people seem into it—praising the idea, tagging friends, and saying they’d love to see it in the U.S.

Where and How Long You Can Try It
Right now, the BK Protein Shake is available only at participating Burger King locations in Brazil, and it’s being offered for a limited time through early November. The chain hasn’t announced plans to bring it to other markets yet, but given how often Burger King uses regional tests to gauge global potential, this launch could be an early trial run for wider rollout.
Burger King has a long history of testing bold ideas in select markets—from the plant-based Rebel Whopper in Europe to cheese-stuffed buns in South Korea. The BK Protein Shake fits right into that pattern: simple, eye-catching, and built for social media.
Brazil makes sense as the testing ground. The country’s fitness culture is massive—protein snacks, powders, and fortified treats are everyday staples there—and a protein shake blends right in with how people already fuel up.
For now, fans outside Brazil will have to wait and see if the experiment travels. If it performs well, the BK Protein Shake could become the chain’s next viral crossover: a fast-food milkshake that caters to the gym crowd as much as the dessert one.
