The IPMA warned this Wednesday of the worsening of the weather in the coming days, with persistent rain and strong wind, especially in the North and Center of the continent, due to the effects of Depression Benjamin.
According to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), the North and Center of the continent will feel the effects of the frontal system associated with Depression Benjamin especially between today’s afternoon and Thursday morning, with an increase in wind intensity expected from the western quadrant, with values that could reach 95 kilometers per hour (km/h) in the highlands.
Rainfall will sometimes be heavy, especially in Minho and Douro Litoral, while being weak in the South region, IPMA reported.
According to IPMA, due to this situation, yellow precipitation warnings were issued for Minho and Douro Litoral, and gust warnings in the highlands of the North and Center regions.
The districts of Bragança, Viseu, Porto, Guarda, Vila Real, Viana do Castelo and Braga will be under warning between 9pm today and 6am on Thursday due to the forecast of southwest wind turning northwest, with gusts of up to 95 km/h in the highlands.
The IPMA issued a yellow warning between 9pm today and 6am on Thursday also for the districts of Viseu, Porto, Vila Real, Viana do Castelo, Aveiro and Braga, but because of the persistent rain, turning into showers, sometimes heavy, which may be accompanied by thunder.
“In the coming days, the weather on the continent will continue to be characterized by a flow from the western quadrant, with the transport of an air mass with a high water vapor content, which will lead to strong and persistent precipitation, especially in the period between Friday, the 24th, and Saturday, the 25th”, the Portuguese meteorological institute also indicated.
The Central region is the one most likely to record higher rainfall accumulations during this period, with values between 50 and 100 mm, a situation that could extend to the North region.
On Sunday, the 26th, weather conditions are expected to ease in the North and Center regions, but with the frontal system moving south, where precipitation may be temporarily more intense until the early afternoon.
Due to the “spatial and temporal uncertainty associated with this meteorological situation”, IPMA advises monitoring the situation and the meteorological warnings that will be issued in the coming days.
The yellow warning, the least serious on a scale of three, is issued whenever there is a risk situation for certain activities depending on the weather situation.
