The floods subsided, but now prices in Veracruz have risen. Many people are taking advantage of the tragedy.

After the storm there was no calm: until this Wednesday the 22nd, the official figure was 78 people dead and 23 not located in Hidalgo, Veracruz, San Luis Potosí, Puebla and Querétaro.

In a video, a young woman talks about the rising prices of various products in Poza Rica, Veracruz, one of the most damaged municipalities. The journalist Ana Osorio, correspondent of the newspaper The Financierreports that in the north of the municipality of Veracruz, generally, a raincoat could cost 200 pesos and a pair of plastic boots up to 500. Currently, he says, they are sold at double those prices. Apparently, it’s still raining for some people, but gains.
Let’s see, a week after the storm, the Presidency of the Republic reported that more than a hundred communities were still isolated, most of them in the state of Hidalgo. There is no way to get to them because several bridges have fallen and there are several roads blocked by landslides in hills. This prevents essential goods from arriving.

In that same video, the young woman attacks the robbery and calls out to those who, in the midst of all the mud, still find the strength to carry beer and Coca-Colas.
The ravages of these rains show us, once again, that natural emergencies are deeply social. The working population, indigenous or peasant families were already fighting against a storm that had hit them for centuries.
The increase in prices is the rules of the market, supply and demand, and the market regulates itself, sacred rules of neoliberalism that, curiously, always punish those who have the least and benefit those who have the most. It is true that those who had an establishment also lost everything, or almost everything. But, hey, there are those who are almost, almost, making poverty their retirement plan and want to retire by selling a carton of eggs.
There are those who move to other municipalities to stock up and buy a surplus that they resell at inflated prices. Fortunately, they are the minority, what has really prevailed is the community support among those who experienced the tragedy, the attention of the federal government, and thousands of people throughout the country who have organized to collect donations and take them to those places.
There are always people like that who, in the face of the storm, apply the old saying: “In a troubled river, a fisherman’s profit,” or a hoarder’s profit.
