In accordance with an agreement issued by the Ministry of Health and published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF)Starting October 21, nursing professionals in Mexico will be able to prescribe certain medications.
The measure authorizes people with a degree in Nursing who work in Primary Care centers of the National Health System to issue medical prescriptionsas long as they comply with the guidelines and characteristics established in the Law and the General Health Regulations.

The document also includes interns, in social service, of the professions of Medicine, Homeopathic Medicine, Dental Surgeon, Veterinary Medicine, in the area of their competence, and people with a Bachelor’s degree in Nursingmay prescribe in accordance with the specifications determined by the Ministry of Health.
What medications can they prescribe?
The power of prescription will be limited to the drugs included in the official list, and must be carried out only after a medical or clinical evaluation of the patient.
In the case of autonomous or initial prescription, nurses may prescribe certain permitted medications on their own, without the need for the intervention of a doctor, as long as their indication is based on the professional evaluation they carry out of the patient.
