Japanese convenience store pop-up to open in Cape Town SOON!

Good news, foodies: Cape Town’s first Japanese convenience store pop-up is opening its doors next week!

Last month, it was announced that Kloof Konbini – where locals can buy authentic Japanese food and snacks – will be opening in the Mother City in October.

Now, the official opening date of Kloof Konbini has been confirmed.

KLOOF KONBINI: OPENING DATE AND LOCATION

Per a recent Instagram post shared by the Kloof Konbini team, the grand opening of the konbini pop-up will take place next Monday, 27 October 2025.

As previously reported, it will be situated at 121 Kloof Street in the heart of the City Bowl.

Details regarding opening and closing times have yet to be confirmed.

WHAT WILL THIS CONVENIENCE STORE OFFER?

Like their Japanese counterparts, this Cape Town-based konbini will offer a wide variety of traditional, on-the-go meals and snack foods.

These include bento boxes, onigiri, sandos and matcha, among other tasty delights.

There will also be halal and vegan-friendly options for you to sink your teeth into.

A JAPANESE CONVENIENCE STORE TO THE CORE

Konbini stores are extremely popular in Japan due to their extensive selections of meals, snacks and beverages, as well as everyday household essentials.

They also offer other services such as printing, ticket purchases for events and transport, and mail and parcel deliveries.

In a previous interview with Time Out, Rebecca Aziz – the co-founder of How’s Your Oni?, a popular Japanese restaurant in Green Point – said that the team’s main goal was to introduce Capetonians to the konbini experience.

“We decided to open a konbini in Cape Town because we just thought it was something Cape Town was missing!” Aziz had explained.

“Many of our customers from How’s Your Oni? would say their favourite part of their trip to Japan was the convenience stores.”

WILL YOU VISIT KLOOF KONBINI WHEN IT OPENS?

As of writing, Kloof Konbini will operate as a pop-up until its lease in Kloof Street expires.

Of course, depending on the success of the konbini, it wouldn’t be surprising at all if the team reconsiders creating a permanent setup.

Be sure to pop in at the pop-up next Monday, and let us know what you enjoyed most about it!
