Greenvolt Next, part of the Greenvolt Group, is developing a project in collaboration with Almada Forum, owned by Merlin Properties, to install a photovoltaic power plant on the roof of the popular shopping center in Almada.
This project includes the installation of around 1,275 photovoltaic panels, with a total capacity of 707.63 kWp, and an estimated production of more than 1 GWh/year (1078 MWh/year).
João Manso Neto, CEO of the Greenvolt Group, quoted in a statement, states that “this is yet another example that decentralized energy production solutions are playing an increasingly important role in the real estate retail sector, by allowing the valorization of existing spaces, generating significant economic benefits and reinforcing commitments to sustainability”.
The installation of the panels will result in a significant reduction in Almada Forum’s carbon footprint, avoiding the emission of around 517 tons of CO₂ annually, which is equivalent to what 23 thousand trees would absorb in the same period.
Generoso Mateus, director of Almada Forum, states that “the self-production of clean solar energy is in line with Almada Forum’s strategy of sustainability and reduction of CO₂ emissions, also adding value to the real estate asset both by reducing operating costs and by increasing the value of the property itself”.
Duarte Ferreira, director of Decentralized Generation at the Greenvolt Group, highlights that “the project at Almada Forum demonstrates that it is possible to implement these solutions in large infrastructures, maintaining the normal functioning of the space. The rigorous planning of each phase allowed us to achieve results without disruption for retailers and visitors”.
The statement also highlights that the project positions Almada Forum as an example in the energy transition of the retail sector in Portugal, integrating a large-scale solar system that optimizes existing space for clean energy production, reduces operational costs and reinforces the asset’s alignment with ESG criteria and the requirements of institutional investors.
