Torres Vedras hosts the world’s largest cooperative event on October 27th and 28th

A Global Inovation Coop Summit (GICS 2025) will bring together hundreds of people from all over the world in Torres Vedras, between October 27th and 28th, to debate topics such as the preservation of natural resources and the fight against climate change. The summit will be hosted by Caixa de Crédito Agrícola Mútuo de Torres Vedras (CCAMTV), one of the largest cooperative banking institutions in the country, chaired by Manuel José Guerreiro, who is also a columnist for Diário de Notícias.

This is the third edition of GICS, after Paris (2022) and Montreal (2023), bringing together personalities from the cooperative sector from 32 countries and different sectors of activity, to debate how to build a “more cooperative and sustainable future”.

Under analysis will be topics such as the circular economy, the digital transition and Artificial Intelligence (AI). The event aims to “sharing experiences, exchanging ideas and building a more inclusive plural economy”, while also seeking to contribute to the “implementation of transformative solutions in the cooperative sector”.

Among the speakers will be personalities such as Rui Moreira de Carvalho, professor at ISCTE; Yuill Herbert, co-founder and director of the Sustainability Solutions Group; Thomas Meyer, CEO of SOCAPS Group; Tom Skinner Chief Operating Officer at the Fair Tax Foundation; Siward Zomer, director of the European Federation of Energy Cooperatives, REScoop.eu; and Osamu Nakano, vice-president of the international organization of industry and services cooperatives, CICOPA.

“Increasing temperatures, scarcity of resources and loss of biodiversity are not just numbers”, it is highlighted in the event’s presentation video, as a way of warning about these signs of change on planet Earth. The organization therefore emphasizes that “we are at a decisive moment in history”, as “the choices we make will have a profound impact on our collective future”, it can be read in the official site of GICS 2025.

Cooperatives play a central role in this matter, being models based on democracy, sustainability and collaboration. In this sense, another objective raised is to understand how they have the possibility of directing these transformations in a positive way.

The event will generate discussions and workshops that aim to “promote collaboration and action”, and there will be opportunities to networking with the guests.

The program is available for consultation at GICS 2025 website.
