European leaders, meeting this Thursday (23 October) in Brussels, urged the European Commission to soon present an “ambitious and comprehensive plan” for affordable housing, complementary to member states’ efforts to tackle the current crisis.
According to European sources, after a debate in which the leaders of Portugal, Spain and Ireland, among others, intervened, the European Council invited the community executive to move forward with the plan, “whose objective must be to support and complement the efforts of Member States, particularly in the context of the simplification agenda, taking due account of the principle of subsidiarity and national competences”.
However, because the housing crisis is currently transversal to the entire EU – as recognized this Thursday by the European Council, which admitted “housing challenges faced by many citizens in the Union” -, several capitals, such as Lisbon and Madrid, believe that Brussels can take initiatives at community level with a view to guaranteeing affordable housing, including financing, state aid and limits on local accommodation.
The European Union is facing a housing crisis, as house prices and rents have increased significantly, and, according to data from the European Council, Lisbon, Barcelona and Madrid are the EU cities where residents allocate a greater percentage of their salary to pay for housing.
