Cuba extradites Zhi Dong to Mexico; delivers it to the US

On July 11, 2025, Zhi Dong Zhang escaped from the authorities after a Judge granted him house arrest.

Mexico City, October 23 (However).- Omar García Harfuchhead of the Ministry of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), reported this Thursday Zhi Dong Zhangbetter known as “Brother Wang”was extradited from Cuba a Mexico and then delivered to USAwhere it is required by international drug traffickingmoney laundering and establishing alliances with criminal groups with a presence in America, Europa y Asia. The individual had a file issued by Interpol.

“On July 11, 2025, he escaped from the authorities after a judge granted him the measure of house arrest, so a search operation was implemented and international bodies were alerted,” Harfuch recalled on X, formerly Twitter.

After his escape, on July 31 of this year, the fugitive was detained in Cuba along with two other people. This Thursday he was handed over to the United States authorities, thanks to the efforts carried out by the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) and in an operation led by the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena), the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar), the National Guard, the SSPC, the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs (SRE) and the National Intelligence Center (CNI).

“We thank the Presidency of Cuba for its valuable collaboration,” said García Harfuch when announcing the result of the international operation.

Who is Zhi Dong Zhang?

According to the DEA, the organization led by Zhi Dong Zhang is based in the cities of Los Angeles, California and Atlanta, Georgia, as well as networks in Central America, South America, Europe and Asia. In 2022, the Federal Court of the Northern District of Atlanta, Georgia, issued an arrest warrant against him, indicating that he was responsible for the export, transportation and distribution of more than a thousand kilos of cocaine, 1,800 kilos of fentanyl and more than 600 kilos of methamphetamines, in addition to handling more than 150 million dollars annually in profits derived from drug trafficking.

Zhi Dong Zhang remained under surveillance by the National Guard at his residence in Lomas de Padierna, in the Tlalpan Mayor’s Office, where he was serving preventive house arrest, until July 11 of this year, the date on which he managed to escape.

According to reports, three people helped the boss escape from a tunnel that connected his house to another adjacent property. After the news was confirmed, the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) issued a red card to locate and arrest Zhi Dong Zhang.

Finally, three months after his escape, Zhi Dong Zhang was arrested in Havana. According to sources from the Security Cabinet, his capture was officially notified to Mexico by the Cuban authorities through diplomatic channels. Zhang had entered the island under a false identity and was arrested a few weeks ago.
