Speed Classic Cape Town: Road closure dates and times

Speed Classic Cape Town is taking place in the Mother City this weekend, prompting several road closures and traffic diversions.

This Saturday, 25 October 2025, and Sunday, 26 October, Philip Kgosana Drive will serve as the racetrack for the high-octane hillclimb event. It will see classic cars, sports cars and supercars tearing up the tar (metaphorically, of course) for a taste of victory.

For motorists and city residents, though, it means that you won’t be able to access this freeway until next week.

ROAD CLOSURES: NOTE THE DATES

Starting at 5:00 yesterday morning (Thursday, 23 October 2025), Philip Kgosana Drive – as well as Christiaan Street and Service Road – will be closed to both inbound and outbound traffic.

Both lanes will be closed until 5:00 next Monday morning, 27 October 2025.

Come Monday, the inbound lane will then reopen, allowing travellers to drive into the city. However, the outbound lane will remain closed to allow for the removal of structures post the racing event.

The outbound lane will also be closed between 19:00 and 5:00 from Tuesday, 28 October, to Thursday, 30 October.

USE ALTERNATE ROUTES

According to Speed Classic’s official website, you are strongly encouraged to use the following alternate routes:

  • N1 incoming and outgoing.
  • N2 outgoing, via the City Centre and Nelson Mandela Boulevard (including Strand Street and Hertzog Boulevard connections).
  • N2 incoming, diverting onto Nelson Mandela Boulevard and taking the Strand Street and Hertzog Boulevard exits.

It may feel like an inconvenience to avoid using Philip Kgosana Drive during the next several days. This is especially exasperating if you regularly use this freeway to travel back and forth for either work or recreational purposes.

For Grade 12 learners who are currently writing their final exams, it can be stressful trying to get to their exam venues in the City Bowl or surrounds on time.

Nevertheless, using alternate routes will ensure your safety. Plus it will get you where you need to be while Speed Classic Cape Town plays out.
