The latest TÜV report reveals an alarming development in the condition of German cars. Despite declining inspection numbers, the number of vehicles with significant defects rose by 3.2 percent compared to the previous year. This suggests that the quality of vehicles on German roads is declining, which is primarily attributed to the increasing average age of cars.
In the last twelve months, 144,074 cars were diagnosed with significant defects during TÜV tests. What is particularly worrying is that in 11,700 cases the cars were classified as unsafe for traffic, meaning that they can no longer be maneuvered under their own power. However, this number shows a slight decrease compared to the previous year.
A key factor in this development could be the increasing average age of vehicles. The decline in new car purchases in recent years has meant that older models are increasingly being subjected to general inspections. The probability of defects increases exponentially with age: While 90 percent of young vehicles (zero to three years old) pass the test without any complaints, only 71 percent of eight to nine year old cars make it through. This rate falls to less than half for vehicles over ten years old.
A total of around 22 million vehicles were examined by testing centers such as TÜV and Dekra. In 132,374 vehicles it was found that dangerous deficiencies had to be repaired before the vehicles could be driven safely on the road again. Additionally, 4.6 million cars were identified as having significant defects, meaning they are in urgent need of repair.
Defects in lighting and electrical systems were particularly common, followed by braking systems as well as axles and tires, which can potentially endanger road safety. These deficiencies highlight the need for regular maintenance and inspection to ensure road safety.
