The secretary general of the PS, José Luís Carneiro, stated on Friday that the Government has been “a complete failure” in health, and pointed out as more recent examples the successive replacements in the leadership of INEM and the creation of regional emergencies.
Speaking to journalists in Braga, on the sidelines of a session as activists to discuss the State Budget for 2026, Carneiro also alluded to the increase in waiting lists for oncological surgeries and the “chaos” in emergencies in the Setúbal peninsula and greater Lisbon.
“Health is a complete failure”, he stressed.
The health minister announced this Friday the creation of regional emergencies, a measure that, for the PS leader, is “recognition of the failure of the Government’s plan” presented a year and a half ago.
“It failed in its entirety, the minister failed, those responsible who made these commitments failed. As you can see, when we proposed to the Government a proposal for the management of hospital emergencies, we were right, because the Government failed and the proof that it failed is that it already goes to the fourth president of the National Institute of Medical Emergency”, criticized José Luís Carneiro.
The PS secretary general recalled that a reform was underway with the executive structure of the SNS, with Fernando Araújo as responsible, and that “the first thing” the current Government did was “decapitate this structure”.
“With that, what did you achieve? Instability and incompetence, the inability to respond to people’s needs”, he said.
As for the State Budget proposal for 2026, Carneiro said that it is “not credible”, considering that it underbudgets expenses and inflates revenue forecasts.
He also recalled that the Government proposes to sell public assets in Lisbon and Porto to raise revenue, which he says is “a bad sign”.
For José Luís Carneiro, it’s about “letting go of the fingers with the rings”.
Even so, the PS will abstain from voting on the Budget, so that the Government has no excuses for not fulfilling what it committed to with the Portuguese.
“The Government will not be able to use the PS’s vote to apologize”, he stressed.
