The United States is preparing a resolution to present at the United Nations to authorize the sending of a multinational force to the Gaza Strip, within the scope of the current ceasefire agreement.
The US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, indicated that the issue will be addressed on Sunday, at a meeting in Qatar.
“Many of the countries that have expressed their intention to participate, whether economically, with personnel or both, will need this [uma resolução da ONU] because their national laws require it, so we have an entire team working on it”, he said during his trip between Israel and Qatar, according to the Israeli newspaper “The Times of Israel”.
“I think ultimately the goal of the stabilization force is to move that line until it covers, hopefully, the entire Gaza Strip, which means the entire Gaza Strip will be demilitarized,” Rubio told reporters on the plane taking him from Israel to Qatar.
On the other hand, State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott reported that Rubio spoke by telephone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and both discussed “collective measures to implement President Donald Trump’s Comprehensive Plan to End the Conflict in Gaza”, reaffirming the “strategic relationship between the United States and Israel”.
Israel highlighted that Netanyahu and Rubio discussed the American politician’s trip, and the Israeli prime minister thanked Rubio for his support and invited him to visit the country again.
Both expressed their commitment to continue “close cooperation and promote the common interests and values that unite the United States and Israel, first and foremost, the return of the bodies of dead hostages, as well as the disarmament of Hamas and the demilitarization of the Gaza Strip.”
The head of American diplomacy was the latest in a series of senior American officials to visit Israel this week, after envoy Steve Witkoff, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and Vice President JD Vance, to try to consolidate the fragile ceasefire.
Under the terms of this agreement, in parallel with the progressive withdrawal of the Israeli army, which began with the entry into force of the truce on October 10, the American plan foresees that Hamas will be excluded from the future governance of the Gaza Strip, where it took power by force in 2007, and that its arsenal will be destroyed.
Israel and Hamas announced on October 8 a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, the first phase of a peace plan proposed by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, after indirect negotiations mediated by Egypt, Qatar, the United States and Turkey.
This phase of the truce involves the partial withdrawal of the Israeli army to the so-called “yellow line” demarcated by the United States, the dividing line between Israel and Gaza, the release of 20 hostages held by Hamas and 1,950 Palestinian prisoners.
The ceasefire aims to end two years of war in Gaza, triggered by attacks on Israel, led by Hamas on October 7, 2023, which caused around 1,200 deaths and 251 hostages.
Israel’s retaliation has already caused more than 68,000 deaths and around 170,000 injuries, most of them civilians, according to data from the Gaza Ministry of Health (managed by Hamas), which the UN considers credible.
