WhatsApp users are currently facing a serious threat as a series of cyberattacks have targeted the popular messaging app. Users in Brazil are particularly affected, where the newly discovered banking Trojan ‘Maverick’ is causing mischief. This malware hides in ZIP files distributed via WhatsApp messages and aims to steal sensitive banking information.
The Maverick threat is particularly perfidious because the malware operates largely in memory and is therefore difficult to detect. It monitors access to financial websites and crypto exchanges and hijacks WhatsApp web sessions to spread like a digital worm. In the first ten days of October alone, over 62,000 infection attempts were blocked.
At the same time, another piece of malware called ‘SORVEPOTEL’ is causing a stir. This malware focuses on rapid spread via ZIP attachments in WhatsApp messages and results in account suspensions due to spam violations. Again, Brazil is particularly affected, with government agencies and companies being targeted.
Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, has introduced new security features in response to these threats. This includes warning users if they want to share their screen with unknown contacts during video calls. Meta is also testing an AI-supported detection system that flags suspicious messages from new contacts and warns of common scams.
Another important step in the fight against cybercrime is Meta’s legal success against the NSO Group. A US court has permanently banned the controversial company from attacking WhatsApp users with its spyware. Despite this success, the security situation for WhatsApp users remains tense and it is crucial that users remain vigilant and view unsolicited attachments with suspicion.
