Universidad Modelo connects – Diario de Yucatán

The Model University opened its doors to Secretariat of Economy and Labor of Yucatán (SETY) for the conference “Competitive Yucatán: Innovation, investment and development”, given by its owner, Ermilo Barrera Novelobefore students and teachers of the master’s degree in Business Management (MBA) and final semester students of Business degrees, as well as the general public.

Teacher Italya Saldaña Solís, Graduate Coordinator of the Business School and responsible for business relations, explained that this activity is part of the innovative educational model promoted by the institution. “Students learn not only the theory, but how to apply it directly with entrepreneurs. We want them to graduate with purpose and with a different vision to generate real changes,” he said.

Barrera Novelo highlighted that one of the axes of state administration, under the vision of Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena, is the industrialization of Yucatán. “We need an industrial policy based on future sectors,” he said, “such as aeronautics, agribusiness, semiconductors or information technology. All require highly trained human talent, and therein lies the importance of the link with universities.”

The official pointed out that the economic development of the state is based on the triple helix: government, private initiative and academia. “We are living in a moment of great geopolitical, economic and technological transformations. If we work in harmony, Yucatán will emerge stronger,” he stated.

During his talk, the secretary presented the state’s new industrial policy, designed to promote structural change in the economy and position Yucatán to face the challenges of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, characterized by technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data and renewable energies.

The strategy is based on three fundamental pillars: investment in industrial and service infrastructure, sectoral planning and territorial planning. Among the strategic projects, the modernization of the Port of Progreso, the expansion of the Mayan Train for cargo, the construction of a metropolitan ring and the development of four industrial corridors with specific vocations, from renewable energies to logistics and aerospace, stand out.

Barrera Novelo emphasized that the true engine of development is human talent, and stressed the importance of training professionals with technical, digital and leadership skills that respond to the needs of the productive sectors. “Coordination with universities is key for new generations to participate in high-value industries and contribute to the sustainable development of Yucatán,” he said.

Question session

In the question session, students addressed topics such as the use of natural gas, the operation of the Chichén Itzá airport, environmental management and export opportunities from the Port of Progreso. The official explained that the modernized airport will attract private and cargo operations, while the port will expand its logistics towards the east coast of the United States.

Carlos Sauri Quintal, general director of the Universidad Modelo, thanked the secretary for the presence and highlighted the relevance of these meetings to strengthen the professional vision of the students. “We are happy to receive those who, from the public service, promote the conditions so that the new generations can develop with competitiveness and leadership,” he expressed.

To close the day, Luis Israel Ruiz Robertos, director of the Business School, thanked the speaker for his participation and gave a present. “Postgraduate training does not end in the classroom; it is complemented with a real understanding of how the state’s economy works and where we are heading as a productive society,” he concluded.— Darinka Ruiz Morimoto
