Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Russia has successfully tested a new nuclear-capable missile that it says is “invincible” and will begin using it on the ground. During the test, which took place on October 21, the projectile was in the air for 15 hours and traveled 14 thousand kilometers, revealed the Chief of Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, General Valery Gerasimov, adding that this is not the limit of this weapon.
Russia claims that the 9M730 Burevestnik (the name of a seabird, the storm petrel), which it announced in 2018 and is known in NATO terminology as SSC-X-9 Heavy rainis “invincible” to current and future anti-missile defenses, with an almost unlimited range and an unpredictable flight path. “It’s a unique piece of equipment that no one else in the world has”said Putin, in a meeting with generals overseeing the war in Ukraine.
The Russian president, who wore a camouflage uniform during the meeting, recalled that in the past experts said that such a missile was almost impossible. In fact, of the 13 tests that have taken place since 2016, only two have had any success, and in one case there was an accident that caused several deaths.
But the problems appear to have been overcome, with Putin giving orders so that he can be deployed. A message to the West and to US President Donald Trump that Russia will never give in to pressure from any foreign power. Washington announced, on Wednesday, new sanctions against two Russian oil companies, with Trump wanting to pressure Putin for an agreement in Ukraine. On Thursday, Putin warned that if Russia is attacked, the response will be “very serious, if not overwhelming.” This after the The Wall Street Journal announced that Trump had lifted restrictions on Kiev’s use of long-range weapons – despite continuing to fail to provide the Tomahawks the Ukrainians wanted.
On the ground, the Russian attack overnight from Saturday to Sunday (25 to 26 October) hit two residential buildings in Kiev, causing the death of at least three people, with another 29 being injured (including six children). According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the Russians used more than a hundred drones in this attack.
