The expansion of data centers in Germany is being viewed increasingly critically as the focus is on the immense energy consumption and environmental impact. A survey by the opinion research institute Savanta.com, carried out on behalf of AlgorithmWatch and several international NGOs, shows that many Germans are concerned about the increasing electricity demand of these facilities. The survey of 1,002 people in September 2025 shows that the population is increasingly pushing for the use of renewable energies in order to minimize the ecological impact.
A key concern of those surveyed is the water consumption that data centers need for their cooling systems. More than half of participants, 57 percent, expressed concern that this could affect their water supply. Concern about the impact on adjacent ecosystems is even more pronounced, with 63 percent of respondents fearing deterioration of their local environment.
The energy aspect should also not be neglected: 43 percent of the population believe that data centers will account for a substantial share of Germany’s energy consumption in the future. Interestingly, 32 percent estimate that this is already the case. These figures illustrate the urgency of finding sustainable solutions to meet energy needs without further polluting the environment.
The demand for sustainable energy production is clear: over 69 percent are of the opinion that new data centers should only be built if they rely on renewable energy. An almost equally large majority of 66 percent demand that additional renewable capacities should be developed to meet increasing energy needs. Only 20 percent of those surveyed are of the opinion that fossil energy sources should also be used.
Julian Bothe from AlgorithmWatch emphasizes the need for additional renewable energy to meet the growing electricity demand through AI applications and not accelerate climate change. Current data center electricity consumption is 3.5 to 4 percent of national consumption, which is approximately 20 to 26 TWh per year. According to the Federal Network Agency, this consumption could rise to 78 to 116 TWh by 2037 and then account for up to 10 percent of German electricity consumption.
