Rain and thunderstorms put all districts of mainland Portugal under yellow warning; bad weather arrives first in Madeira and the Azores

All districts of mainland Portugal will be under yellow warning this Tuesday due to the forecast of rain, sometimes heavy and accompanied by thunderstorms, reported today the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).

This Monday, the districts of Faro, Évora, Setúbal and Beja are under yellow warning between 12 pm and 9 pm, due to the forecast of showers, sometimes intense and accompanied by thunderstorms.

Already Tuesdaybetween 12pm and 9pm, the 18 districts on the continent will also be under yellow warning for the same reasons: intense rain and the possibility of thunderstorms.

Bad weather in the autonomous regions

The south coast and mountainous regions of the island of Madeira, as well as the Eastern and Central groups of the Azores, are also under yellow warning today due to rain.

O IPMA also issued a yellow warning due to strong winds for the south coast of Madeirawith gusts of up to 75 km/h, and for mountainous regions, where gusts can reach 100 km/h, between 9 am and 6 pm on Tuesday.

No Central Azores group (São Jorge, Faial, Pico, Terceira and Graciosa), the yellow warning due to heavy rain and thunder valid until 9 am. The Eastern group (São Miguel and Santa Maria) remains under yellow warning until midnight on Tuesday.

The yellow warning, the least serious on a scale of three, is triggered whenever there is a risk for certain activities depending on weather conditions.

Conditions at sea in Madeira

The Port Authority of Funchal today issued a strong wind warning for Madeira’s seafrontvalid until 6 am on Tuesday.

According to IPMA forecasts, the wind is expected to intensify during the night, becoming strong to very strong, between 51 and 74 km/h. Visibility at sea may vary between good and moderate, sometimes poor. To the waves on the south coast are expected to reach up to 4.5 meterswhile on the north coast it will be around two meters.

In view of these conditions, the regional maritime authority recommends caution to the maritime community and the population, suggesting the reinforcement of mooring and surveillance of moored or anchored vessels; avoid walks near the sea and areas exposed to sea disturbances; and do not practice recreational fishing in dangerous places.
