MÉRIDA.- The new fee proposed to Special Tax on Production and Services (IEPS) in soft drinks and sugary drinks worries small businesses due to their low profit margin.
So he warned Luis Enrique Contreras Ramírez, president of the National Chamber of Small Commerce and Tourism (Canacope Servytur).
There is fear of a decline in sales due to the rise in beverages
Recently the Chamber of Deputies approved the increase in the IEPS on products such as tobacco, sweetened beverages, as well as games and raffles.
In the case of sugary drinks, Economic Package 2026 It was indicated that it will be $3.08 per liter for soft drinks and juices.
In addition, there will be a new tax of $1.50 per liter for drinks with sweeteners and non-caloric sweeteners—light or zero—.
“The increase is relatively low, it is $3 per liter, $1.50 per half liter. The problem is that our utility in this product is between 10% and 12%, and with energy consumption that percentage is reduced further.”.
The businessman pointed out that during the fall and winter the consumption of soft drinks tends to drop between 30% and 40%, which also impacts sales in the sector.
“We are already leaving summer, which is when it sells the most. During this season, people change soft drinks for coffee, chocolate, cookies or sweet bread.”.
Although the measure may be inconvenient for small businesses, the president of the Canacope considered that the objective of reducing sugar consumption has a positive purpose.
“Mexico is one of the main consumers of sweetened beverages in the world and we have a high rate of diabetes and obesity. If this decision helps take care of the health of the population, we support it,” he expressed.
You have to adapt
When asked about his position on the recent decision to include rehydration drinks in the tax, he commented that merchants will have to adapt.
“These companies will have to modify something so that their product is truly effective and useful for the population,” he said.
From the Canacope recommended its affiliates adjust to market changes.
“If it sells a lot, we buy a lot; If it sells little, little. The measures will be applied and we must adapt”.
The leader insisted that the real concern is in the conditions offered by the soft drinks companies.
“More than the IEPS, what affects us is the low percentage of profit that companies leave us”.
He also called to strengthen local consumption through projects such as “Made in Mexico”.
“This helps strengthen the economy of the most vulnerable population. We invite all shops, bakeries and stationery stores that want to join our union. We are waiting for you here with open arms.”, he said.
