WH Farms Co., a young biotech startup specializing in growing and processing hemp for cosmetic and wellness products, is planning a major expansion in Winston-Salem. With an investment of $2.9 million, the company will create 41 new jobs with an average annual salary of $79,354. This expansion marks an important step in the company’s growth strategy.
Currently, WH Farms Co. is located in the Winston Starts startup incubator downtown. The company plans to purchase a 12,000-square-foot building in Winston-Salem to take product formulation and manufacturing in-house. Previously, the products were manufactured by a contractor in Maryland. This shift is intended to increase efficiency and improve control over production processes.
Nicole Vanderhorst, CEO of WH Farms Co., emphasizes the importance of this expansion for the company. She sees this as an opportunity to integrate product development and manufacturing into the company’s vertically integrated model and consolidate the entire supply chain within North Carolina. The support of local economic development initiatives contributed significantly to this decision.
WH Farms Co. offers both white label services for brands developing hemp-based product lines as well as its own wellness products. The company is certified to GMP and ISO standards, licensed by the USDA, and follows ICH Q7 guidelines for API manufacturing. The products contain no psychoactive THC and are classified as medical wellness items by the NC Department of Commerce.
The expansion is supported by various local and state organizations, including the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina and the City of Winston-Salem. Stan Parker, president of Winston Starts, sees WH Farms Co. as an example of successful support for startups in the region. The expansion is seen as a “complete, domestic project” that highlights the region’s strengths in biotechnology and manufacturing.
WH Farms Co. plans to expand both nationally and internationally and invest in research into herbal wellness products. These plans are consistent with the National Science Foundation’s focus on regenerative medicine and plant-based therapeutics. The company’s long-term goals include expanding its customer base and driving innovation in herbal wellness products.
