To journalists, before traveling between Kuala Lumpur and Tokyo during his five-day visit to Asia, the President of the United States was confronted with a trick suggested in recent days in conservative circles, to remain in the Presidency. A trick that would involve being a candidate for vice president in the next presidential elections of 2028 and, once the elections are won, the candidate for President would step down and give way to Trump – who, remember, is in his second term and is limited by the Constitution to running for a third.
Trump discarded the proposal, even though he guaranteed its dubious legality. “I can do that. I wouldn’t do that, it’s too misleading. We can rule it out. I don’t think people would like that, it wouldn’t be right,” he told the press. Regarding a third term, which is obviously illegal, he was more receptive.

“I loved doing this. I have my best numbers [de sondagens] as always,” he replied.
When a journalist asked him if this implied the intention to bend the rules, Trump preferred to talk about his likely successors, Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. “I think if they form a group, they would be unstoppable,” he argued.
The President of the United States thus continues to avoid discarding legal and authoritarian mechanisms to remain in the White House and be a candidate in November 2028 – when he would be 82 years old, the age Joe Biden was when he left the Presidency -, and in recent times even argued that a majority of Americans want to see a dictator rule the country. The North American press has indicated that, if Trump does not move forward, his likely successor will be JD Vance, who has assumed a leading role in international affairs and legislative matters that are unusual for a vice president.
