The European space industry is facing a major shakeup as Airbus, Thales and Leonardo form a new alliance to challenge SpaceX in the commercial space sector. This collaboration, which will be based in Toulouse, France, is expected to be operational until 2027 and brings together the participating companies’ satellite manufacturing and space systems. Interestingly, launch activities are excluded from this alliance, despite Airbus holding a significant stake in ArianeGroup.

The decision to collaborate comes at a time when SpaceX dominates the market with its Falcon 9 rocket. Considered the first commercially built reusable rocket, this rocket revolutionized space travel and gave SpaceX a significant advantage. The Falcon 9 was responsible for 83 percent of all spacecraft launched in 2024, highlighting the challenges for European competitors.

The new alliance between Airbus, Thales and Leonardo is seen as a step towards strengthening European autonomy in space. The companies plan to join forces to overcome industry fragmentation and provide a unified European response to SpaceX’s global dominance. This collaboration is expected to employ around 25,000 people in Europe and generate annual sales of around €6.5 billion.

While the alliance aims to expand European sovereignty in space, the challenge remains of competing with the reusability and capacity of SpaceX rockets. European rocket developers such as Isar Aerospace and Avio are working to improve their technologies to keep up with American standards. The future of European space travel depends on whether we can overcome these technological hurdles and create a sustainable alternative to existing American offerings.
