After several days of protests by farmers in the center of the country, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader) announced an increase in the guaranteed price of corn to 6,050 pesos per ton in Guanajuato, Jalisco and Michoacán, a figure that represents 25% above the international reference price.
The head of the agency, Julio Berdegué Sacristán, reported through a message on YouTube that the decision was made after a second dialogue table with peasant leaders held this Monday at the Ministry of the Interior, where producers demanded an adjustment to compensate for the collapse in prices and the increase in production costs for inputs and fuels.
In addition to the new guarantee price, the official announced a credit program for white corn producers, with a preferential rate of 8.5% annually, accompanied by agricultural insurance to mitigate risks due to losses in the agricultural cycle.

He explained that the registration windows will open “as soon as possible”, while the state governments will publish the operational mechanics of the complementary support.
The peasant mobilizations in the Bajío reflect the pressure that national producers face due to the fall in international prices and the oversupply in the markets.

However, although the announced adjustment seeks to stabilize the sector’s income, the organizations warn that the cost of corn remains below the levels necessary to guarantee profitability, and Sader emphasized that the dialogue remains open.
